Live Longer: Be More Swiss This Year

Hello fellow yodelers,

I finally made my 2010 Swiss resolutions. Better late than never, right? Well, maybe not, considering this is Switzerland. Anyhow, from eating more cheese to talking more auf deutsch, I share my resolutions on a guest post over at one of my favorite Swiss blogs, Queso Suizo. Check it out here.

And today, over on Expatica, I give tips on how to increase your life expectancy, Swiss style. Yes, it's deceiving. Because while the Swiss seem to smoke and eat cheese and chocolate like there's no tomorrow, they still have the fourth highest life expectancy in the world. Yes, life is unfair. How do they do it? Find out here. And long live the Swiss.

Don't you have to qualify it to be 12kgs of *dark* chocolate to be good for you? :)

Hoping they would have a smoking ban in restaurants by now (?), especially mountain restaurants. I'm heading to the Switzerland tomorrow for some fresh mountain air, snow and skiing. And cheese and chocolate!

Hi Richard,

I love dark chocolate so that doesn't worry me, but I really don't think the Swiss care one way or the other. People here seem to eat whatever they want, their secret to staying slim is to keep active.

The smoking thing is still bad. A country-wide ban goes into effect in May this year, but restaurants still get away with allowing smokers if they are under a certain number of square meters. And Zurich claims smoking is banned in public areas, but every time I go to the main train station I'm engulfed in it. Their definition of public certainly isn't mine.

Huh -- the Swiss live longer than the French? Maybe the addition of wine into the chocolate and cheese diet kills the Frenchies off earlier. But honestly -- who wants cheese without wine, anyway?

Maybe it's the linguistic abilities that keep the Swiss alive so long versus the French. While the French speak, well, French, the Swiss speak Swiss German, German, French, English and more. Their brains are always alert, having to switch languages from one city to the next, I don't know. I don't think it's the wine. The Swiss drink so much Swiss wine, there's nothing left to export (either that or they do it to cover up the fact that no one else wants it).
