A Little Swiss Aktion

Hurry! A big sale!
Maybe you've noticed. Nothing in Switzerland is big. Small apartments. Small aisles. Small country.

So naturally, sales are small as well.

Three per cent. Eleven per cent. Thirteen per cent.

The Frau has seen it all. And none of these discounts are usually high enough to persuade her American-trained "take 80% off already reduced prices at Kohl's" mind to rush over to take advantage of them (especially, when, like this one pictured, they come from furniture stores with SFr 15,000 couches).

Where do these stores get these numbers? Imagine if you will, a Swiss meeting to decide the discount.

"Well, what about 10% off?"

"Good, but that's really only saving people the 8% tax plus 2%."

"Well, how about 15% off?"

"What?! That's making things too cheap! People won't buy them. They'll think something is wrong with the quality."

"Well, then. The magic number must be 13%!"

"Perfect. Let's now let's get a little Aktion going on that."

I love the Kohls reference...I've vowed never to buy anything at Kohls if it isn't on sale...because if it isn't now, it will be sometime very soon! However their "buy one get one 1/2 off" sales are exceedingly annoying...sometimes I only need one! But anyway, I do love the exciting value of Swiss "aktions" - I actually took advantage of one today (maybe the store in your picture), but the items I purchased were already special aktion, so no additional 13%, but I did get 10% on top of the sale price with my customer card and will anxiously await my additional 3% with my statement!

So we have lived here for 2 years, and up until about a month ago I thought that the "1/4" sale sign meant something was 25% off. Then a Swiss friend explained to me that this means it is actually 75% off. I am SOOOO mad at all of the sales I have been missing! Also, Migros and Coop have killer deals on their toys after Christmas. I bought a huge lego set at coop for 20 CHF, and the funny thing is that right now the same store is selling the same set for 99.99 CHF. I don't understand!

Wow, didn't know about the 1/4 thing. Really? Hmm. I have been missing out. And I've been here almost six years.

I agree that if you hit the right sales at the right time you can get amazing deals. I just got a pair of jeans for CHF 10. And if you can wait on things until January or July, even better.

The rest of the year, however...

The best discounts I've found are at Denner for their wines. They sometimes have anywhere from 20% to 50% off their good selection of wines (especially Italian and Spanish). Sante! or hürl! or whatever you say in Schweizer Deutch.

Yes, Denner is a good place for wine. They have great prices for chocolate too. Prost!
