Shopping Insanity on swissinfo.ch

It was Saturday. I went to Migros. That was my first mistake.

As most people living in Switzerland know, the Migros supermarket is a madhouse on Saturdays. Without fail, the entire Swiss population jams itself into various Migroi around the country with no thought about the consequences (which, by personal experience and regulated calculation, involve approximately one bruise per bag of groceries.)

To read more about my psychotic Saturday shopping experience last week, go to swissinfo.ch.

Have any of you experienced the madness that only a Saturday Swiss shopping experience can bring?

Gosh, no, I am fortunate enough to be able to shop on weekdays.
And don't even think about that tiny Migros in the HB, on a weekend.

That tiny Migros in the HB would be my worst nightmare!

Just another case and point on why things need to be open on SUNDAYS!!!!

I find between 5-7 pm on weekdays its crazy too. Speaking of that - I gott go now!

I do my shopping on a Saturday - most Saturdays actually - despite the fact that I also go after work a lot, too. Oh the joys of working full time... and it is crazy in the morning. The trick though is to go around 4 pm. No one... but then you have to keep your afternoons free. I think I need to shop online. That's it.

Ps. Migroi? ;)

I avoid Migros like the plague on Saturdays. In fact, I do all of my shopping at the ONLY late night grocery store I've found in Zurich.

It's also the same size as my closet. At least it's not crowded.

Chantal, as always it is a pleasure reading your stuff.

Good to know it's not just me and that some of you have found solutions to avoid the insanity! For some reason, it seems like the stores in Baden (with the exception of the Denner) are jammed the entire day on Saturday no matter what the hour.

Saturday at Coop Sihl City (or any Zurich grocery for that matter) is like shopping right before a meteor hits. By 6pm, there's no food left and everyone is in a panic. We always end up at the gas station getting milk and eggs late on Saturday night. It was fun to read your account of the madness.

Yeah, it's amazing how a lack of bread can inspire a group panic attack. Thanks for reading.

Ha, I rarely made it out of the apartment in time to get to the shops on Saturdays in Switzerland, and when I did, I limited it to quick, tactical missions in the grocery store. Definitely don't miss that...

I usually never make it to the markets on time--and they are right below my window. They start putting everything away around 11.15. I mean, really.
