When in Switzerland, Skip Lucerne

Don’t get me wrong, Lucerne (or Luzern) is a beautiful Swiss city, but every time I go there, I can’t wait to leave. It’s just so overrun with tourists in the summers that it has lost all its charm. Buses full of Americans, Germans, Japanese and Italians take over the city. And let’s be honest, people walking around holding metal poles topped with colored tassels to herd groups of tourists is just not a Swiss tradition (but you can bet the making money part of it is). One of my visitors asked if this was my favorite Swiss city, but the real truth is, with all the camera-toting, tassel-waving humanity there, it will never make the top ten (except to maybe take a photo of the Gutsch Hotel). No, my list of The Top 10 Swiss Cities No One Visits will come soon in what I’m learning in my travel writing class, is called a Round-Up article.

The round up article sounds great. I'd definitely be interested in what the best cities are in Switzerland as well as how big there are to get a sense of scope.

On a small note, I saw that you're an expat and thought that I'd tell you about jaxtr (www.jaxtr.com) which lets you make cheap international calls to your mobile phone.

Enjoy Switzerland!

Cool. Well I'll get working on that one. Hopefully a pub will like the idea too. Thanks for the info on the calls.

You're very welcome. Have you done much travel writing for publications? I see that you are a copywriter from your profile.

I've done a little travel writing, but have more experience in other forms like copywriting and personal essay writing. I've written for the Christian Science Monitor and have a column on expat life that will be starting this winter in Swiss News.

I visited Lucerne in October last year and rather liked it. The transport museum is incredible (especially as I got in for free). I didn't notice any tourists. Actually, I barely noticed anyone. Saying that though, it was October and it was pissing it down with rain.

Lucerne is mainly packed with tourists in the summer. But if you're in Switzerland in the fall, winter, or spring, it's very pleasant.
